The focus of this project was to create a series of three posters that not only advertise an event, but also draw the viewer in through unexpected typography. My event involved three influential writers: Rabindranath Tagore, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Toni Morrison.

Poster Series: Three Influential Writers

Unconventional materials like glass, mirrors, charcoal, and water were used to alter printed type. The charcoal was especially intriguing because it could be made to look like dripping ink or smeared writing.

Typographic Sketching

One of the major aspects of this project was developing a concept that fit with the identity of each of the writers as well as the design itself. These were my three main ideas based on my research on the writers.

3 Concept Directions with Sketches

  • Each writer captured their culture in words to unveil it to the world.

  • Uses overlapping opacities and veil-like imagery to hide and reveal text.

1. Culture Unveiled

  • Each writer shared powerful stories that left a lasting impression.

  • Uses emphatic text and bold strokes to highlight the power of words.

2. Stories Speak Louder

  • Each writer’s personal stories of cultural division or hardships had a unifying effect on their readers.

  • Uses fused type to represent unity and imagery to represent division.

3. Unity Through Division

I narrowed it down to concept number three because I was intrigued by the contrast between unity and division.

Digital Iterations

Due to the flatness of the first iterations, I experimented with adding color and manipulating type to create unpredictable shapes. The idea gradually transformed into representing “Unity Through Division” through the type itself and not images. The fused type represents unity, and the fragmented type represents division.

My color choices in the past had been random and lacking in cohesion. For my final choices, I decided on colors that had significance to the authors’ life experiences.  The color blue is also used to unite each of the three posters.
